About this bill
Committee urges government to enshrine school religious services in law
The Standing Committee on Education and Research is considering a private member's bill from Ida Lindtveit Røse, Hans Edvard Askjer, and Joel Ystebø proposing that all pupils be offered the chance to attend school religious services. The committee majority—comprising the Progress Party, Conservative Party, Centre Party, and Christian Democratic Party—has put forward a proposal for the government to amend the Education Act to clarify that the ban on proselytizing does not prevent school religious services from taking place, and that all pupils should be offered the opportunity to attend as long as local churches wish to invite them. Members from the Socialist Left Party and Liberal Party oppose the proposals, arguing that current rules work well.
