About this bill
Committee split on private school deregulation and Jotunheimen approval
The Standing Committee on Education and Research is considering two private member's bills on private schools. The government approved Jotunheimen private school as a Christian institution on 19 January 2026; the committee has therefore filed the first bill with the minutes rather than recommending it to the Storting. Members from the Progress Party, Socialist Left Party, Centre Party, and Red Party have submitted a separate proposal to award diplomas to the school's students. The committee is divided on the second bill, which seeks to amend the Private Schools Act section 2-1: members from the Progress Party, Conservative Party, Christian Democratic Party, and Liberal Party argue that the threshold for "substantial weight" should be lowered to give schools easier access to establish themselves, while members from the Labour Party, Socialist Left Party, Centre Party, and Red Party oppose such changes.
