About this bill
MPs propose replacing Norway's monarchy with a republic
Grete Wold and six other MPs from various parties have introduced a proposal to transform Norway from a hereditary monarchy to a republic. The proposers argue that a president elected by the people would be more democratic than an inherited monarchy. The proposal is conditional on a referendum approving the change by 31 September 2030. The Standing Committee on Scrutiny and Constitutional Affairs recommended rejecting the proposal with a large majority, citing polling that shows broad public support for the monarchy.
