About Innsyn
Innsyn means insight — or transparency — in both Norwegian and Icelandic. The platform tracks the Norwegian Storting: every member, every bill, every vote, with plain-language summaries in Norwegian and English. It exists to answer a simple question that turned out to be surprisingly hard to answer: who governs me, and what are they deciding?
Who builds this
Innsyn is built and run by one person: an Icelander who has lived in Norway for years, pays taxes here, is affected by every law passed here — and still could not easily find out who was in his own government. Over a million people in Norway live under Norwegian law without Norwegian as their first language. This platform was built for them first, and for everyone else who wants parliament to be legible.
How it works
All parliamentary data comes from the Storting's own open data, published under the NLOD licence. AI generates the plain-language summaries. A second automated pass checks each Norwegian summary against the source document; summaries it flags are withheld until a human has reviewed them, and the rest are published without individual human review. The English version is a translation of the checked Norwegian summary. Each summary carries a provenance note showing the model used, when it was generated, and whether a human has approved it. The full pipeline is described on the data & methodology page.
Independence
Innsyn reports what happened, not what to think about it. Vote results are facts, not verdicts; bills are described by what they propose, not whether they are good ideas. The platform carries no advertising, takes no money from parties or lobby organisations, and answers only to its readers. If you find an error, report it — confirmed errors are corrected with a visible notice.
Standing on shoulders
Innsyn is not the first attempt to make the Storting more transparent. Holder de ord pioneered Norwegian parliamentary vote-tracking, matching party promises against actual votes for over a decade, and published their work as open source. Innsyn exists in the space they opened. Where Innsyn differs: it is fully bilingual — built for the million-plus residents who read English more easily than Norwegian — it adds AI-generated plain-language summaries of every bill, and it is actively maintained with data that is always current. Different tool, same conviction: democracy works better when people can see it.
